Mobile Legends Bang Bang: Revenue Passes $500 Million as Southeast Asia Powers Rapid Growth

Mobile Legends generated $214 million in 2019, which is the best year it has ever had, Sensor Tower data shows.

Mobile Legends Bang Bang from Moonton has seen rapid growth in the past year, bringing total revenue that has surpassed $502.5 million, as per Sensor Tower Store Intelligence estimates.

It was released in 2016, and the well-known smartphone MOBA is seeing its player spending grow each year, reaching $214.1 million in the year 2019 growing by 36 percent year-over-year. The game recorded the highest month of its history in December which brought in $24.4 million, boosted by the launch of 2.0 2.0 of the game.

A large portion of the game’s outstanding revenues come from Asia especially Southeast Asia, where the game has earned 307 million dollars, which is 61 % of the total revenue since its game’s launch. With the exception of China which is where Mobile Legends is not available Moonton’s game is the highest-grossing MOBA within Asia. It’s even higher than Tencent‘s Blockbuster Honor of Kings which has grossed $251.4 million that isn’t its Chinese market.

Malaysia has proven to be Mobile Legends’ most lucrative market, with players there spending $87.5 million in the game or 17 percent of total revenue. Indonesia ranked No. 2 for player spending, generating $69.2 million, or 14 percent of the total, while the United States was No. 3, racking up $64.1 million, or 12.8 percent of all revenue.

Google Play’s Google Play version accounted for the bulk of the revenue of more than $340 million or the 68 percent share of users’ spending. App Store consumers, in turn, have spent $162.4 million, which is 33 percent of the total. The average revenue per download for Mobile Legends currently stands at around $1.80.

In its entire life, Mobile Legends has accumulated 281.3 million downloads. Of these, 212.1 million, or 75 percent of them came from Asia.

The most downloaded country was Indonesia with 100.1 million or 36 percent of all unique installations. The Philippines came in at No.2 in the rankings with 41.2 million downloads, which is 15 percent. Vietnam came in at No.3 in the third spot with 21.3 million downloads, or eight percent from the overall.

In terms of revenues, Google Play also took the biggest part of downloads, with 250.7 million downloads which are nearly 89 percent of the total. Its App Store, on the other hand, has accumulated nearly 30.5 million downloads, which is 11 percent.

Mobile Legends’ success outside of China over its rivals like Honor of Kings can be attributable partially to the advantage of first-movers. The game was launched prior to the launch of Tencent’s game in important markets like Malaysia, Indonesia, and the U.S.–which currently comprise the third-highest-ranked regions. Exploring that gap in the market, it has seen exponential growth every year for what has become one of the biggest MOBAs whether on mobile or not.
